Identity Theft

Well, today did not go as I had planned. My plan was to be in the office all day and push a lot of things out the door. Instead I spent the entire day dealing with identity theft. Who's? Mine.

I looked at my bank account online today and noticed an unusual charge. A series of phone calls, faxes and a visit from the police later I realized someone had used my checking account numbers to do something online. The bonus was that the police officer who came was Sarah's husband.

It is yet to be untangled, but it has sucked up my whole day. I don't think any major damage has been done, but I'm mighty pissed. Anyone who knows me well knows that the one thing I am most protective of is my time. Some little weasel has sucked down a day of my life with this foolishness - a day I'm never going to get back - and I'm not done with it yet.

I'm not really sure how you're supposed to pay for anything these days. I've had five instances in the last few months of my information being "compromised" by various agencies, making credit cards unsafe. I already have a fraud alert on my credit card.

I had to get a new debit card a few months ago because a local store was keeping people's pin numbers on file. Because I pay for many things automatically with my debit card that required hours of my time to get everything changed over to the new information.

You're not supposed to give people cash because there's no paper trail. Now I've learned that giving people checks is obviously not safe either. So, I don't know how you're supposed to pay for anything.
